Matty Ice 1990 is a rising voice in conscious hip-hop whose music tells stories of struggle, survival, and growth. His journey has been anything but easy, shaped by addiction, trauma, and a life of challenges. Now, he uses his art to inspire others, proving that pain can be turned into purpose.
Growing up, Matty Ice 1990 admired gangster rap. “With the life I was brought up in, I thought selling drugs and fighting was the cool thing to do,” he admits. Music initially influenced him to walk a dangerous path, but it also taught him an important lesson: music has the power to impact lives. That realization fueled his decision to create something different—music that inspires and helps people.
During his time in and out of jail, Matty used poetry as an outlet. It allowed him to express the emotions he couldn’t share otherwise. “That’s why I got good at writing,” he explains. “So when I started music, the lyrics part just came naturally.”
Matty’s journey into music began after rehab. Armed with a $300 PreSonus kit—a microphone, headphones, and recording software—he taught himself the basics through YouTube and Google. The hours spent learning didn’t feel like work because he had discovered something deeper: passion.
His hard work led him to Scott Gross, a producer from Bombshelter Studio who became both a mentor and a guide. Scott constantly pushed him to aim higher. “He never lets me settle for less,” Matty says. Under Scott’s mentorship, Matty’s music evolved into an authentic expression of his struggles and victories.
The beginning wasn’t easy. People laughed at his early songs, and Matty often felt alone. “I didn’t have much money for the studio, so I taught myself everything,” he recalls. Yet, those same critics now praise his progress.
Performing live presented another challenge. Matty battles PTSD and anxiety, which made being on stage difficult. But he refused to give up, starting small and pushing through his fears. “It got easier over time,” he says. His determination not only helped him grow as an artist but also proved his resilience.
Matty Ice 1990’s music is a reflection of his personal growth. Songs like Rock Bottom tell the story of his lowest points, while his newer tracks lean toward positivity. “I’m growing as an artist as I grow with my mental health,” he explains. His creative process often starts with a theme or message. Other times, he pieces together random lyrics and verses, creating songs that flow from his lived experiences.
His style thrives over boom bap and chill-hop beats, blending smooth flows with conscious lyrics. Matty’s focus has shifted toward uplifting and relatable music, showing listeners that they can overcome their struggles, just like he has.
At the core of Matty Ice 1990’s journey is a desire to help others. His music tackles themes like mental health, addiction, and finding purpose. “I want people to realize that if they find passion in something, they’ll find peace,” he says. It’s a message rooted in personal experience.
Matty hopes his songs will inspire listeners to face their fears and embrace life’s possibilities. Writing music is therapeutic for him, allowing him to reflect and grow. “As I write, I come to realizations I didn’t think of before,” he explains.
Matty is excited about his upcoming music. His next two songs include a relatable track about relationships and a positive anthem to uplift listeners. He also hopes to explore danceable, club-friendly songs that promote fun without glorifying drugs or alcohol—staying true to his message of creating meaningful content.
Matty dreams of collaborating with Colicchie and had always wished to work with the late Mac Miller. “People say I remind them of Mac Miller, and I respect Colicchie because he’s real in his music, like I am,” he says
