In the world of music, blending genres can create something truly special. Obsouleet, a rising country rap artist from Kentucky, is doing just that. In an exclusive interview, Obsouleet shares his journey from writing poetry to making music that mixes country vibes with hip-hop beats. Let’s dive into his story, influences, and what’s next for this talented artist.
Obsouleet’s love for music started with poetry. As a teenager, he used writing to express his feelings because he didn’t talk about his problems with others. “In high school, I started writing a lot,” he says. His poetry soon turned into song lyrics. A friend introduced him to a local studio, and that’s when Obsouleet knew music was his true passion. “I felt at home in the studio for the first time in my life,” he recalls.
Though Obsouleet didn’t set out to be a country rapper, his Kentucky roots made it a natural fit. Growing up, country music was a big part of his life. “I was raised on country music,” he explains. His southern accent and love for artists like Johnny Cash influenced his style. “When I started using my singing abilities, it felt natural to blend country with rap,” Obsouleet says. He prefers to call himself an artist because he loves painting pictures with his words.
Obsouleet draws inspiration from a wide range of artists. His biggest influences include Eminem, Jelly Roll, and Tech N9ne. “Eminem is the GOAT,” he states. Jelly Roll’s life story inspires him to never give up, while Tech N9ne impresses him with his business skills and stage presence. Obsouleet also loves country legends like Johnny Cash and Garth Brooks. Rock influences like Corey Taylor from Slipknot add another layer to his music. This mix of country, hip-hop, and rock makes Obsouleet’s sound unique.
The name “Obsouleet” holds deep personal meaning for the artist. “Obsolete is how I have felt my entire life,” he shares. It represents feeling unseen and unheard growing up. In 2020, Obsouleet rebranded from his previous duo name, “It’s Goin Down,” to better reflect his journey. Inspired by a song from Jeff Hardy’s band, Peroxygen, he added “SOUL” to his name to show that music is a crucial part of who he is.
Obsouleet’s creative process usually starts with a beat. He locks himself in the studio and builds a concept around the music. Sometimes, he has ideas first and then finds the right beat. “I go with what I’m feeling at the time,” he explains. He tweaks his songs until he’s happy with the final mix. Obsouleet’s attention to detail ensures that each track is polished and true to his vision.
Fans have a lot to look forward to from Obsouleet. His new EP drops on all platforms on December 13th. He also has two shows planned for this year, including an EP release party. Obsouleet is working on merch bundles and finishing songs for his next album. Additionally, he’s excited about releasing a music video with Keith Cash before the year ends.
Obsouleet is launching “The Gutter Rat Rockstar Radio Show,” a weekly show that features underground artists, classic hip-hop, and rock music. Sometimes, the show will be live. Obsouleet wants to showcase his favorite records and connect with his audience through music. Each episode will have a different vibe, reflecting Obsouleet’s diverse musical tastes.
Obsouleet dreams of collaborating with artists like Rittz, Don Trip, and FJ Outlaw. He has already worked with artists like Knuckles, The Hicks, and Keith Cash. In the next five years, Obsouleet hopes to continue performing, host his radio show, and explore DJing. His main goal is to live comfortably by making music full-time without seeking fame. “I’m happy playing the shooting guard,” he says, showing his humble approach to his career.
Obsouleet has valuable advice for anyone starting in music. “Be ready for a lot of disappointments and letdowns,” he advises. He emphasizes the importance of having thick skin and staying hungry to succeed. “The biggest critic you’ll ever face is yourself,” he says. Obsouleet encourages new artists to learn from others and never give up, no matter the challenges.
Obsouleet’s journey from poetry to country rap is inspiring. His unique blend of country, hip-hop, and rock creates a sound that stands out. With new projects on the horizon and a passion for connecting with fans, Obsouleet is a country rap artist to watch. His story is a testament to the power of music and staying true to oneself.
